Google is an IT company based in Mountain View, California. It majorly specializes in internet related services which includes searching, cloud computing and software development. Google was first started by the name of “Backrub” by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in March, 1996 while completing their Ph.D. Google slowly gained popularity and from garage based company; it has become the most popular search engine in the world and later started many services with it like YouTube, Android for mobile development etc. During this time, we have seen that Google logo also evolved with the development of the company and it has a lot from where it has begun.
The very first logo of Google was kind of creepy. Back in 1996, when it was known as Backrub, it has a very less cartoony and colorless image of the back of a hand above which Backrub was written in red. The search engine project was named as Backrub because it used backlinks to rank the websites.
In 1997, a pre-launch logo was named. By then, it was decided to run the search engine by the name of Google. The pre-launch logo was the word Google written in animated style with dark colors and gives a very amateurish look.
From September to October, 1998
From October 1998 to May 1999
This logo was designed by one of the company’s co-founder Sergey Brin using a free graphic designing software GIMP. An exclamation mark was also added at the end mimicking Yahoo! logo. The color combination from the previous version was also changed. The first G was changed to blue from green with a slight dark complexion and shadow behind the letters was increased. This color combination is still used today with a minor difference.
From May, 1999 to May, 2010
The logo was used for almost eleven years and is the most used logo in the history of company till date. Exclamation mark was removed from the end and got a more sophisticated and professional look due to Catull typeface. The color scheme remained almost the same. This logo is still used in some pages.
From May, 2010 to September, 2013
After eleven years, this was the major difference in the logo and the company decided to use new one. The logo was first introduced in November, 2009 and it was official used in May, 2010. The projected shadow of letters was reduced and color scheme remained almost the same with the second “o” having a different yellow hue from the previous version.
From September, 2013 to September, 2015
Flattened letters of same font style with the same size were used and the shadow was completely removed as the trend was set during those days to use the flattened letters and almost all the IT companies, majorly internet based companies were changing their logo using flattened letters. The colors were the same with light complexion.
The Current Logo
Recently, Google has decided to launch its new “logo and identity family”. The logo is now styled in sans-serif font style letters with the same colors. Actually, Google Inc. has decided to move Google and other divisions and sub-divisions which came under Google such as android and YouTube under a new name, Alphabet Inc. So, Google Inc. has now become Alphabet Inc. with Google search engine (www.google.com) being a part of Alphabet. The style of new logo is similar to the logo of Alphabet Inc. The web domain for alphabet Inc. is abc.xyz.
